How Often Do You Really Need a Dental Cleaning?

Dental cleanings are one of the most important things you can do to preserve good oral health. Having your teeth professionally cleaned at the dentist is a necessary part of your annual check-up. Typically, dentists will suggest cleaning twice a year, and in certain cases, every 3 months.

What is a Dental Cleaning?

A dental cleaning consists of a thorough examination of your teeth and gums, usually with a small mirror, in order to assess around your teeth for any signs of gingivitis or other issues. After an examination of your teeth, the cleaning process begins. Cleanings are typically performed by a Hygienist.

There are three steps:

  • Cleaning – during this step, tartar and plaque are removed from the teeth with a scaling tool. Then the spaces in between your teeth get cleaned with a specific flossing technique. During this process, the hygienist will use a Prophy-jet, an air-polishing tool that uses water, air and sodium bicarbonate powder to help remove plaque.
  • Polishing – the hygienist will use a rotating brush with dental paste to polish each individual tooth.
  • Fluoride – the cleaning process is usually completed with a fluoride treatment in the form of a paste, gel or varnish. This is intended to prevent cavities.

Why they're necessary

Dental cleanings are an essential part of good oral health. Regular brushing and flossing can still leave tartar and debris that builds up over time. Cleanings can also remove unsightly stains that won’t be removed with regular brushing.

Bad oral health can lead to problems like tooth decay and additional health issues like heart disease and diabetes. It is essential to make your oral health as much of a priority as your overall health.

What to do in between cleanings

Brushing your teeth twice a day, followed up with gentle flossing is a great way to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy in between dental cleanings. It is worth noting that your brushing technique plays a major part in how clean your teeth can be. Without a proper technique, you are not doing much.

The best way to brush is in a circular motion, holding your brush at a 45 degree angle. Be sure to be gentle, and to keep it at no more than 2 minutes.

In some cases, if you’re at risk or have had periodontal disease, the dentist will suggest it every 3 months.
